After holding the Dodgers to one-run wins in the first two games of their three-game series, the Pirates’ pitching unraveled last night as J.T. Brubaker let up seven earned runs in a 9-0 loss to Los Angeles.
Joe Block has the story.
Manager Derek Shelton said the Dodgers just hit anything Brubaker threw at them.
Shelton said Dodgers hurler Mitch White was lights out and it caused issues for the Pirates offense.
The Pirates have now lost five of their last six games thanks to the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend and the Dodgers this week. Shelton said this sort of competition is frustrating for a young lineup.
The Pirates are off today and will begin a three-game weekend series in St. Louis tomorrow night.
MLB Pipeline has released its Top 100 prospects and the Pirates are well-represented on the list. Making the rankings are two newcomers and three returners.
No. 1 overall pick from this year’s MLB Draft catcher Henry Davis comes in as the 23rd best player in baseball. Following him at No. 53 is 2019 first-round pick right-handed pitcher Quinn Priester; shortstop Oneil Cruz comes in at No. 57; and 2020 first-round pick Nick Gonzales comes in ranked at No. 68.
Also new to the list is shortstop Liover Peguero, who comes in ranked at No. 94, after having himself quite the year with High-A Greensboro.
The young shortstop has a .261 average with 11 HR, 36 RBI and is third on the team in hits with 73. He also earned High-A East Player of the Week honors after hitting five home runs in a four-game stretch in the final week of July.
For the Pirates pipeline, Davis comes in ranked as the No. 1 prospect in the organization. Priester, Cruz, Gonzales and Peguero round out the top five. Curve pitcher Roansy Contreras comes in at No. 6, second-round draft pick Anthony Solometo and fourth-round pick Bubba Chandler take the seven and eight spots. Tucapita Marcano and Carmen Mlodzinski cap off the Top 10.
64th overall pick Lonnie White Jr. just misses the Top 10, but comes in ranked as the eleventh-best prospect in the Pirates system.
We said yesterday that Matthew Fraizer’s recent stretch of success could land him as one of the Pirates’ top prospects, and we were correct as he’s ranked as the 23rd prospect in the Pirates system, trailing third baseman Maikel Escotto by three spots.
PIRATES INJURY NEWS:
Right-handed pitcher Blake Cederlind was cleared to resume playing catch on flat ground. The hard-throwing right-hander has been out of action since early March after suffering a UCL strain in a Spring Training game against the New York Yankees.
Starter Miguel Yajure is listed to start for Triple-A Indianapolis tonight in what would appear to be another rehab stint. Yajure has been out of action since May 26th with a back injury and has made two rehab starts with Low-A Bradenton.
