Pennsylvania drivers face a high risk of hitting a deer this fall, with the odds at one in 62—more than double the national average (one in 139).
State officials urge motorists to slow down and stay alert, especially at dusk and dawn, due to the deer’s fall breeding season (“rut”) and the end of daylight saving time. Since deer often travel in groups, if one crosses, others are likely behind it. Pennsylvania led the nation in animal collision insurance claims last fiscal year.
Drivers who hit and kill a deer can claim the carcass by contacting the Game Commission within 24 hours, but they must follow rules regarding the transport of high-risk parts from Chronic Wasting Disease Management Areas.
