Jefferson County voted to cut two sheriff’s office positions during a heated salary board meeting.
One deputy role and the sergeant position were eliminated after tax assessment duties were moved to another department. Sheriff Sam Bartley and Treasurer Jim VanSteenberg opposed the cuts, citing safety concerns.
The meeting grew tense, with accusations and arguments exchanged. Despite pushback, the board voted to proceed with the cuts.
VanSteenberg is also suing the county over its security ordinance.
