The Pirates’ losing streak finally came to an end last night, thanks to the hot bat of Bryan Reynolds and two reliable relievers.
Joe Block has the recap.
Manager Derek Shelton says the Pirates losing streak was not necessarily the result of playing poorly.
Bryan Reynolds was 2-for-3 and is hitting .404 in the month of June. He was 15 for 28 on the Pirates’ eight-game road trip and says he has finally found a comfort level at the plate.
David Bednar threw 43 pitches in his two-and-two-thirds innings of relief and earned his 11th save after two scoreless innings by Wil Crowe. Bednar says he didn’t let the length fo the outing get to him.
The Pirates’ many injured players are slowly working their way back. Director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said yesterday that outfielders Ben Gamel and Jake Marisnick, shortstop Kevin Newman, and infielder Josh VanMeter are all ticketed for rehab assignments in five to ten days. First baseman Yoshi Tsutsugo will be evaluated for a rehab assignment this weekend and pitcher Dillon Peters is “about two weeks away” from returning.
The Pirates are off today and will open a three-game series with San Francisco tomorrow.
MLB
- Major League highlights last night included former Pirate Tyler Anderson no-hitting the Angels for 8 and-a-third innings before Shohei Ohtani broke it up with a triple in the Dodgers win.
- Aaron Judge hit his MLB-leading 25th home run for the Yankees in their win over the Tampa Bay. The Yankees have the best record in baseball at 46-16.
- And the Astros became the first team in history to throw two immaculate innings in the same game in their 9-2 win over the Rangers. Both Luis Garcia and Phil Maton struck out the side on nine pitches, Garcia in the 2nd inning and Maton in the 7th. Even more improbable…it was the same three hitters each inning for the Rangers. (Nathaniel Lowe, Ezequiel Duran and Brad Miller.
ALTOONA CURVE
Blake Sabol circled the bases when his 8th inning single got away from Erie center fielder Parker Meadows for a three-base error, and three runs scored on the play to give the Curve a 5-4 win. Matt Gorski homered for the Curve and had two hits. Matthew Fraizer and Liover Peguero also had two hits and JC Flowers threw two scoreless innings of relief for the win.
Game three of the series is tonight in Altoona, with the Curve throwing right-hander Luis Ortiz.
